Promises & Partnerships

Rooted in Belonging, Reaching Beyond

At Bluebird, education is a shared journey built on strong partnerships between parents, teachers, children and the wider community. For 75 years, our success has been rooted in connection, care and belonging. From the very first high five at the gate, to the staff’s warm greeting, to the open-hearted welcome in the classroom, we intentionally model a culture of care and community awareness. Children learn from day one that they can make a difference by using their heads, hearts, and hands to reach out and serve others.

Contract of Belonging

The Bluebird Promise: Our Contract of Belonging

At Bluebird, everyone belongs. This promise formalizes the partnership we believe binds us together before we reach outward to others. It is the foundation of our ethos and the heartbeat of our community.

Belonging means:

  • You are safe to be yourself
  • You are listened to
  • You are treated fairly
  • You are included in play & learning
  • You are encouraged to try, learn, and grow

Living the Bluebird Promise

Every day, we have the opportunity to show kindness, respect and care through the choices we make.

By living the Bluebird Promise, we help create a community where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to grow.

Together we will:

  • Look after one another
  • Use our Head, Heart, and Hands every day
  • Speak kindly and act fairly
  • Help make Bluebird a happy and safe place for everyone

Walking the Journey Side by Side

The home–school partnership is vital to every child’s success. Bluebird’s warm “open door” policy means easy, open-hearted communication is always possible whether it’s a quick chat with a teacher, popping in to see the Head, or sharing a moment at pick-up time.

Termly parent–teacher conversations and bi-annual reports provide structured feedback, while ongoing dialogue builds trust and understanding.

Just as importantly, we create opportunities for parents to connect with one another, strengthening the supportive network that surrounds each child.

In this way, the Bluebird Promise is lived out daily with families, staff and children walking the journey side by side, bound together by care and belonging.

The Heartbeat of Our Community

Our Parent Association (PA) is the backbone of Bluebird’s community spirit. Led by a dedicated Chair and supported by class representatives, the PA plans joyful events that celebrate belonging and raise funds to enrich our school.

Importantly, every fundraising event also carries an outreach component, reminding us that community means serving others too.

Whether children are making sandwiches, collecting toys and clothes, or creating cards, these small but beautiful gestures show them that, even as little as they are, they can make a difference. By weaving outreach into the rhythm of school life, we nurture empathy, responsibility and a lifelong awareness of community.

We encourage all parents to get involved from day one, because when families come together, children see firsthand the power of collaboration, care, and the Promise we share.

The Hand Print Trust Fund: Serving our Own

Rooted in care for our immediate community, the Hand Print Fund supports Bluebird families and staff when education is at risk due to hardship or tragedy.

It also provides opportunities for staff and their children to access extraordinary educational experiences, conferences and workshops both locally and internationally.

This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that every child and educator within our Bluebird family can continue to grow and thrive.

Warm Welcome

Connections Begin at the Gate

Every morning at Bluebird begins with connection. Our amazing team runs the scholar patrol, greeting families and keeping our little ones safe. From that first cheerful high five, to the staff’s warm greeting, to the open-hearted welcome in the classroom, Bluebird is all about building relationships and making everyone feel at home.

These daily rituals embody our belief that belonging starts the moment you arrive. They remind children that they are safe, listened to, treated fairly and included in play and learning. These simple principles form the heart of our Bluebird Promise.

Outreach Initiatives

Bluebird Outreach Initiatives: Roots in Community, Wings to Serve

At Bluebird, our ethos extends beyond our gates. We believe children flourish when they learn that their Heads, Hearts and Hands can make a difference.

Outreach is woven into the rhythm of school life, always age-appropriate and child-inclusive, giving children agency to participate meaningfully.

Examples of outreach include making sandwiches for a children’s home on Mandela Day, collecting toiletry essentials for moms and babies, or creating art gifts to brighten someone’s day.

Little Wings Bursary

Little Wings Bursary Fund: The Gift of Becoming a Bluebirdie

Reaching beyond our immediate community, the Little Wings Bursary Fund offers a child the priceless gift of a Bluebird start and a chance to become a Bluebirdie.

For a child who would otherwise not be able to afford this opportunity, the fund opens the door to an outstanding preschool education, inclusion and belonging.

Guided by our ethos of giving children “Roots to Grow and Wings to Fly”, the bursary provides a strong academic foundation while nurturing confidence, creativity and community awareness.

Where needed, children may also access pro-bono therapy through our NEST staff, supporting their holistic development.

Beyond Partnerships

Beyond Bluebird Partnerships: Opening Pathways, Shaping Futures

A Bluebird Pre-Primary education is more than a beginning, it is a trusted gateway into Johannesburg’s premier Pre-Preparatory schools. Generations of families testify to the strength of the partnerships we have nurtured with our prestigious partner schools, relationships built on shared values and a commitment to every child’s flourishing.

And just as our children learn to partner with one another through belonging, kindness and the daily practice of Head, Heart, and Hands, so too do they carry this spirit into the wider world. We are confident that once children leave the Bluebird Nest, they will spread their wings, embrace the next important step beyond, and continue to thrive within the distinguished institutions that await them.

Enduring Partnerships

Together, we are so much more.

It is with pride that we introduce the schools with whom we share these enduring partnerships.
